LeBron James stirred up the NBA rumor mill again this week, simply by posting a few workout photos.
The shots, which appeared on his Instagram, featured Los Angeles Clippers logos in the background. As usual, that was enough to send social media into full-blown speculation mode.
Fans immediately started guessing. Was LeBron sending a message to the Lakers? Was he eyeing a move across the city?
The short answer, according to league sources, is no.
“LeBron was working out at a Klutch Sports Group office,” one NBA source told DallasHoopsJournal.com. “Klutch uses the Clippers’ old Playa Vista facility. This is a non-story. People need to stop reading into everything LeBron does. Plus, LeBron will never play for the Clippers. He has said that many times to people in his circle.”
In other words, the only thing unusual about the post was how quickly it caught fire.
LeBron, 40, picked up his player option to stay with the Lakers for the 2025–26 season. There will be no trade request or buyout, sources said. If he wanted out, he would have simply opted for free agency.
Yes, agent Rich Paul issued a cryptic message to ESPN’s Shams Charania earlier this summer, but that was more about putting pressure on Lakers exec Rob Pelinka than hinting at an exit, sources added.
And it worked.
Soon after, the Lakers added Jake LaRavia, Deandre Ayton, and Marcus Smart. League sources said Luka Doncic, who is expected to sign a long-term extension with the Lakers this weekend, personally helped recruit Ayton and Smart. Austin Reaves played a role in bringing in LaRavia.
LeBron is expected to finish out the next season in Los Angeles, then become an unrestricted free agent in 2026. At that point, retirement could be on the table — or he could keep going and try to team up with his second son, Bryce James.
Either way, he is not heading to that other team in L.A.
