Rumor: Warriors Not Interested In Kings’ DeMar DeRozan As Part Of Possible Jonathan Kuminga Trade

The Golden State Warriors are not interested in acquiring veteran wing DeMar DeRozan as part of any package involving restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga, according to Sam Amick of The Athletic.

That points to Golden State aiming for a return focused on youth and draft capital rather than established names.

Kuminga, 21, has been the subject of steady speculation this offseason. The Sacramento Kings are believed to be strongly interested, and reports suggest Kuminga may feel the same way about the Kings.

The contract stalemate has resulted in Kuminga reportedly wishing to play elsewhere next season.

DeRozan, 35, had a productive first year with Sacramento. He averaged 22.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and 4.4 assists over 77 games, shooting 47.7 percent from the field and 32.8 percent on three-pointers.

Despite that consistency, Golden State appears focused on getting younger and building flexibility for the future.

One rival scout told Hoops Wire that he would not be surprised if a team that has yet to be linked to Kuminga swoops in and makes a surprise trade. The Washington Wizards and Brooklyn Nets were mentioned as possibilities.

Kuminga averaged 16.1 points and 4.8 rebounds last season while shooting nearly 53 percent from the field. He offers the kind of athleticism and upside that makes him perhaps the most intriguing young player available this summer.

If the Kings want to land him, they will likely need to put together a package that includes a promising young piece and a future pick or two.

The Warriors are holding their ground and showing no interest in veterans.

That includes DeRozan, no matter how productive he still may be.
