Russell Westbrook has been in and out of the lineup for the Sacramento Kings of late.
The former NBA Most Valuable Player sat out Sunday’s 116-111 win over the Utah Jazz due to a foot injury. Westbrook was in action the night before, in a 118-109 loss against one of his former teams, the Los Angeles Clippers.
Before the L.A. game, Westbrook was also sidelined. He missed Wednesday’s 117-109 defeat at the hands of the Charlotte Hornets due to a quad issue.
The Kings are back in action on Tuesday against Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs, and the good news is that Westbrook is trending in the right direction.
Westbrook is currently in his first season with the Kings. He joined the team in the offseason on a one-year, $3.6 million deal. The 37-year-old has played 62 games this season (56 starts), averaging 15.4 points on 42.8% shooting, 5.5 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 1.3 steals. Westbrook is also knocking down a career-high 2.0 triples on a 34.1% clip.
Despite now being in his 18th NBA season, Westbrook continues to be a key contributor for the Kings. This is exactly why his return to the court is good news for Sacramento.
The Kings submitted their injury report for Tuesday’s matchup against the Spurs, and Westbrook is no longer listed. This only means that barring any unforeseen setbacks, the 6-foot-4 guard-forward should be back in the lineup against Wembanyama and Co.
The Kings, however, have nothing left to play for this season. They still have 13 games remaining on their schedule, but they have already been officially eliminated from playoff contention.
Westbrook and the Kings currently have an 18-51 record, which is the worst in the Western Conference.
