Russell Westbrook Shares Major Career Update Amid 18th NBA Season

Sacramento Kings star Russell Westbrook continues to grab headlines as he closes in on a decade in the NBA. The nine-time All-Star is currently playing in his 18th year in the league, and while he may no longer be the marquee superstar he once was, there’s no denying that the 37-year-old still has a lot of gas left in the tank.

A testament to this fact is how Westbrook turned in another vintage performance in Friday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The former NBA MVP logged another triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists, en route to marking a historic career milestone.

Unfortunately for the Kings, not even Westbrook’s historic performance was enough to carry them to victory. Anthony Edwards went off for 30 points, while Julius Randle dropped a 26-point, 11-rebound double-double to lift Minnesota to a 124-110 win in their NBA Cup matchup.

Despite the loss, Westbrook was able to make league history by becoming just the second player to amass 25,000 points and 10,000 assists. The 6-foot-4 guard took to social media on Saturday to share his historic career update.

“Didn’t have to chase the numbers, just the joy. The rest followed. Humbled and grateful through it all,” Westbrook posted on Instagram.

With his 13 assists on Friday night, Westbrook also became just the eighth player in league history to reach the 10,000 assists mark . Westbrook has now joined Magic Johnson, John Stockton, Chris Paul, Jason Kidd, LeBron James, Steve Nash and Mark Jackson on the elite list. The fact that Westbrook has etched his name alongside some of the greatest playmakers in history speaks volumes about his legacy in the NBA.

Westbrook will get more opportunities to continue making history in the immediate future. Kings head coach Doug Christie inserted the veteran into his starting five on Friday, which could potentially be a permanent move for Westbrook.

The 3-10 Kings are back in action on Sunday. They will be on the road to face the San Antonio Spurs at Frost Bank Center.
