With nothing promised and everything questioned, the Sacramento Kings have a ceiling falling on them.

Not of any burden or shame, but of a miserable run for the 2026 NBA season, which could have been starkly different if their hands returned them equal favors throughout the season.

Despite a disappointing campaign, the Kings have made a surprising call on their leadership, making it clear that Doug Christie is here to stay.

According to team sources, the Kings will retain Christie as head coach heading into next season, shutting down speculation about a potential change after a 22-59 finish. The decision comes after months of uncertainty surrounding the franchise’s direction following a turbulent year.

Christie, who took over as interim coach in December 2024 before signing a three-year deal, faced an uphill battle from the start. Sacramento’s struggles were compounded by roster instability, including the fallout from the De’Aaron Fox trade and a wave of injuries to key players like Domantas Sabonis, Keegan Murray, and Zach LaVine.

Internally, the organization believes those factors played a significant role in the team’s poor record, leading to the conclusion that Christie deserves more time under more stable conditions.

While the Kings sat at a dismal 12-46 in late February, a more respectable 10-13 finish provided a glimmer of hope that Christie’s message is beginning to resonate.

However, the path ahead remains steep. The Kings must navigate a complicated financial landscape, including Zach LaVine’s nearly $49 million player option and ongoing trade discussions surrounding veterans like Malik Monk and DeMar DeRozan.

With the draft lottery looming on May 10, the franchise is banking on a combination of luck and stability, giving the head coach at least one more opportunity to lead the rebuild he helped start.

Sacramento Kings See Opportunities Heading Into Postseason

With an unexplored opportunity for a championship ring going down the drain, the Sacramento Kings may find themselves in a surprisingly advantageous position heading into the offseason.

Much of that optimism stems from the growing uncertainty surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks. With tensions reportedly rising and Milwaukee coming off a missed postseason, the possibility of a blockbuster trade has opened the door for multiple teams, including Sacramento, to get involved.

For the Kings, this represents more than just a chance to chase a superstar. It’s an opportunity to reset their roster. Sacramento has been exploring ways to move high-salary players like Zach LaVine and Domantas Sabonis, and a potential league-wide reshuffle triggered by a Giannis deal could create the flexibility they need.
