The Sacramento Kings fell just short of a berth in the NBA Playoffs, falling to the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Play-In Tournament as the No. 9 seed in the Western Conference.
Many were shocked when the Kings traded De'Aaron Fox in a three-team trade with the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs that landed them Zach LaVine, three first-round picks, and three second-round picks.
The trade was just the latest move in the Kings' history of puzzling decisions. After the Kings drafted Fox in 2017, they passed on players like Luka Doncic and Trae Young to select Marvin Bagley to build around Fox.
However, that didn't stop them from drafting Tyrese Haliburton No. 12 overall in 2020. However, the Kings traded Haliburton to the Indiana Pacers at the trade deadline of his second season, continuing their plan to build around Fox.
While hindsight is always 20-20, Doncic and Haliburton have each led their team to an NBA Finals appearance, while Young led the Atlanta Hawks to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021.
Now, with no true point guard, Jake Fischer of The Stein Line gives three point guards the Kings could pursue this offseason, including Malcolm Brogdon, Marcus Smart, and Jrue Holiday. However, none are particularly close to the talent level of the guards they've sent out the door in recent years.
“New general manager Scott Perry, remember, immediately highlighted the Kings' need for improved playmaking during his introductory press conference and sources have duly linked Sacramento to various guards known to be available this summer," said Fischer. "That list includes Holiday in Boston and Marcus Smart in Washington ... and stretches to more affordable free agent ballhandlers like Malcolm Brogdon.”
The Sacramento Kings are searching for a point guard and are expected to show interest in Malcolm Brogdon, Marcus Smart, and Jrue Holiday, per @JakeLFischer

With players like DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, Malik Monk, and Domantas Sabonis, the Kings have no issue scoring the basketball. Defense is where they lack.
Bringing in a point guard to help facilitate and defend on the perimeter could be just what the Kings need if they hope to improve upon the 40-42 mark this past season.
