ESPN’s Shams Charania is one of the prominent figures in the NBA insider community. He has been the source of some of the most shocking trade news, including news about Luka Doncic’s trade to the Los Angeles Lakers. However, it was his report on Kevin Durant’s trade to the Houston Rockets that truly caught him off guard.
Charania has developed a strong network of sources within the league, ensuring he gets updates before anyone else. Yet, some of his revelations come at the most unexpected times.
In a recent interview with Esquire, ESPN’s analyst shared a memorable story about how he was at his cousin’s wedding when he received the stunning news that the Phoenix Suns were finalizing a deal to send Durant to Houston. He couldn’t help but pause his wedding dance the moment that text came through.
“As soon as I got that text, I wasn’t dancing anymore,” Charania said.

Charania revealed that after receiving the update on Durant, he caught a flight back to Oklahoma City to report the news live on TV.
Kevin Durant suffered a right knee contusion after bumping knees with a teammate during practice, which caused him to miss Game 1 of the First Round playoff series against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Durant returned for Game 2 but then sprained his left ankle and sustained a bone bruise, leading him to miss Games 3, 4, and 5. During Durant’s absence, the Rockets kept their championship hopes alive. However, his availability is critical for the team. Ahead of Game 6, ESPN’s Shams Charania provided an update on his status.
“Breaking: Kevin Durant will miss Game 6 in the Rockets-Lakers series, sources tell @ShamsCharania.” Via ESPN.
