Many people have questioned whether the younger Lakers stars provided more defensive value than James at age 41. Following a disappointing playoff exit, former NFL star Shannon Sharpe offered a reality check regarding the Lakers’ defensive structure.
Sharpe spoke on his Nightcap podcast to address the growing criticism surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers. The topic centered around defensive accountability following the Lakers’ Western Conference Semifinals exit.
Sharpe’s comments went viral after X user NBA__Courtside shared the clip on May 27. During the segment, Sharpe said, “I guarantee you, y’all do not think in your heart of hearts that Austin Reaves or Luka Doncic are better defenders than LeBron at 41. At no point in time in their career, or in their career, will they ever be the defender that LeBron James was or is currently… Be honest with yourself!”
Shannon Sharpe believes Luka and Austin Reaves will NEVER be as good of a defender as LeBron is at age 41:

Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves have been discussed in these debates. The team suffered from inconsistent defensive chemistry ever since the front office traded for Doncic midseason.
Sharpe’s point was that an ageing superstar still impacts games on the defensive end much more than Doncic or Reaves.
He acknowledged that the veteran is not the same player he once was. However, the analyst challenged his viewers to identify a single stretch of basketball where either young player defended better than James.
The defensive resume for James is huge. He is a five-time All-Defensive First Team selection who carries a high defensive basketball IQ. During the 2025-26 regular season, he still managed to average 1.2 steals and 0.6 blocks while switching across various positions.
In contrast, Doncic faces long-standing criticism for his defensive effort, while Reaves is considered a limited defender who posted a poor 117.8 defensive rating this year.
This defensive debate naturally leads to the most pressing offseason question facing the Los Angeles franchise.
The future uncertainty surrounding James is the biggest storyline in the entire league. He is entering unrestricted free agency this summer after exercising his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season.
The Lakers might need to create more financial flexibility after choosing to build a new foundation around Doncic.
James recently shared some very honest thoughts regarding his upcoming career decisions. “I don’t know what the future holds for me,” he explained to reporters shortly after the playoff elimination. However, he added, “I know I can still give so much to the game,” leaving his playing status wide open for the summer.
Several possible outcomes exist for the veteran forward. He could return to the Lakers on a reduced contract to chase another ring. He could also decide to join an entirely different contender on a minimum deal.
The presence of his son, Bronny James, on the current roster and a desire to compete for another championship will also be a deciding factor.
