Source: Hawks Interested In Trading For Suns’ Kevin Durant

The Atlanta Hawks are interested in trading for Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant, a source told Sam Amico of Hoops Wire.

The Suns will trade Durant this offseason. Durant, 36, has one year left on his contract. The future Hall of Famer will make $54,708,609 next season. 

Atlanta and Phoenix missed the playoffs this year. The Hawks are searching for a new president of basketball operations, while Phoenix needs a new head coach for the third year in a row. 

Durant turns 37 in September. The small forward averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists for the Suns this season while shooting 52.7% from the field, 43.0% from beyond the arc and 83.9% from the free-throw line.

One of the greatest scorers in NBA history, Durant has career averages of 27.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Warriors, Brooklyn Nets and Suns. He won two championships and two Finals MVPs with the Warriors but hasn’t gotten back to the NBA Finals since leaving Golden State in 2019. 

The Suns acquired Durant from the Nets in 2023. Phoenix lost to the Denver Nuggets in the second round of the 2023 playoffs and was swept by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the 2024 playoffs.  

Durant doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract, so he can’t control where he plays next. However, the Suns are expected to work together with Durant and his camp to find a preferred landing spot, a source told Hoops Wire. 

The Hawks are led by All-Star point guard Trae Young, who has a rapport with Durant. Young led Atlanta to the conference finals in 2021. It appeared the Hawks had a bright future with the Oklahoma product leading the way. 

However, Atlanta hasn’t won a postseason series since 2021. The team needs another dynamic scorer next to Young and Durant certainly fits that bill.
