Heading into an active summer, general manager Brian Wright is on the hunt for talent. In particular, the Spurs are looking for a talented power forward to play alongside Victor Wembanyama in the frontcourt.

To their luck, a prominent big man from the Minnesota Timberwolves might be available. The cap is tight in Minnesota, leaving LSU product Naz Reid on the outside looking in. The Spurs have the opportunity to form a dangerous frontcourt duo, and one that could take them over the top. Let’s dive into the possibility of the Spurs signing Reid.

Spurs Could Look to Steal Timberwolves’ Superb Sixth Man Naz Reid

This past season, Reid posted a career-high 14.2 points and six rebounds per game, finishing fifth in Sixth Man of the Year voting. The 25-year-old is only getting better and has thrived amongst starters when his name is called.

Reid knows how to pile up the points and is an incredible shooter for his size. At 6-foot-9, Reid attempted a career high 5.8 threes per game this season and netted 37.9% of them. This excellent clip was even better in the 2023-24 season, where he finished a jaw-dropping 41.4% of his three-point attempts. Reid is a unique player who fits what everyone wants in the modern three-point era. He brings exactly what the Spurs want.

Naz Reid Would be a Perfect Fit in San Antonio

Reid would slide right into the starting lineup in the Alamo City without hesitation. He is extremely talented and has been capped by the experience that resides in the Timberwolves’ starting lineup. In addition to his knack for shooting, Reid is also a capable shot creator and playmaker.

Reid’s offensive upside his through the roof and could be maximized next to Wembanyama. Crucially, Reid would excel in San Antonio, whether creating for himself with his rare ball-handling skills or finding open looks off the star-powered Spurs lineup. He would be left open in transition as defenses collapse on the speed of De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle running downhill. In the halfcourt, all the attention will be drawn to Wembanyama, allowing Reid the space and comfort to do what he does best.

Furthermore, Reid is qualified for the Spurs’ future timeline as a surefire, win-now player and somebody who can grow alongside the youthful supporting cast. With keen attention from rookie head coach Mitch Johnson, he could elevate even further and tune his play style to fit the Spurs’ winning formula. Overall, Reid would be an ideal fit with the Spurs.

What Will it Take to Bring In the Big Man?

Because Naz Reid is such a unique and promising player, he will come at a lofty cost. According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, Naz Reid is expected to decline his 2025-26 player option with the Minnesota Timberwolves. As the option presented $15 million, it has become clear that Reid is seeking a big payday. Reid could command over $20 million on the open market, a salary that the Wolves may not be able to afford. The Spurs, however, have the means to do so.

If his cost remains at this level, it would be a great move by San Antonio. While expensive, Reid brings tremendous value, particularly for the Spurs. Reid could be the missing piece that Wembanyama, Fox, and the crew have been waiting for. All they need to do now is make it happen. As a frenzied summer approaches, watch out for San Antonio as the Naz Reid sweepstakes begin.
