The San Antonio Spurs are shutting down their star point guard for the rest of the season.
De'Aaron Fox has been dealing with a nagging finger injury, suffering tendon damage during training camp with the Sacramento Kings in October and playing through pain during the season. ESPN's Shams Charania reported that the Spurs are shutting down Fox for the remainder of the year and sending him to season-ending surgery to repair the tendon damage.
Fox came to the Spurs in a trade-deadline deal with the Kings, but the Spurs have lost seven of their last 10 games and have fallen further outside the play-in tournament.
Fox struck an optimistic tone as recently as earlier this week, saying he was hoping the team would bounce back after two straight losses to the New Orleans Pelicans.
"Especially dropping two in a row to New Orleans, you definitely want to come out there and win those games, but I wouldn't say that they're any different than others," Fox said after beating Dallas. "I mean, you play 82 games, so you have to figure out a way to have that same motivation night in and night out."

The Spurs have already lost star Victor Wembanyama, shutting down his season in February after he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. The team also lost head coach and coach Gregg Popovich after he suffered a mild stroke in November.
