Warriors coach Steve Kerr later told reporters that Steph Curry was “fine” and had only tweaked an ankle. With Golden State opening Wednesday night at the Lakers, even a minor scare is going to get plenty of attention this week.
Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area caught the moment on video as Curry headed back to the locker room. Hoops Rumors, summarizing ESPN’s Anthony Slater, says Curry slipped during a scrimmage and hurt his right leg.
He then slammed the ball into the floor in frustration while teammates showed immediate concern.
There was early worry that it was his knee, according to NBC Sports. The team has since called it an ankle sprain, and the outlet’s read is that it doesn’t look severe.
The Warriors will already be shorthanded. Jimmy Butler (ACL) and Moses Moody (left patellar tendon) are both expected back around midseason, and center Kristaps Porzingis remains away from the team with an undisclosed medical issue, per NBC Sports.
When those players do come back, the offense still runs through Curry’s scoring and the spacing his shooting creates. He’s 38, a 12-time All-Star, and the one piece nobody on this roster can replace. A short absence in October would be survivable.
A long one would reshape the whole season.
Earlier in the week, Kerr said the team plans to rest Curry in certain situations, especially on back-to-backs. He even told fans to check the schedule before buying tickets, according to Nick Friedell at The Athletic.
Kerr added that several other veterans fall under the same plan.
An ankle sprain, even a mild one, adds another variable.
If Curry is limited early, the Warriors may be tempted to hold him out of games they’d otherwise want him in, and that makes the schedule matter even more.
