'Straight line drives or cheap fouls': Stephon Castle Details Tactically Defending SGA’s Supporting Cast

The Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the San Antonio Spurs 127-114 in Game 5. This win gives the Thunder a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference Finals. However, Stephon Castle believed the issue for the Spurs came from somewhere else.

Castle spoke to the media after the loss. The rookie posted a team-high 24 points on 7-of-11 shooting. He also added five rebounds, six assists, and three steals. After the game, Castle shared the main reason behind their loss.

“I think it started with just containing the ball, especially the guys that aren’t SGA that aren’t like natural on ball creators, not allowing them to get straight line drives or cheap fouls,” Castle said.

“Straight-line drives” happen when a defender gets beaten easily on the first step. Oklahoma City’s non-primary creators like Alex Caruso, Cason Wallace, and Jared McCain exploited this weak point. These easy drives pushed the Spurs to rotate.

Game 5 featured a high foul count and controversial whistles. Head coach Mitch Johnson even received a technical foul during the contest. The “cheap fouls” comment from Castle shows frustration with how easily Oklahoma City generated free-throw pressure.

This was even more frustrating because the Spurs had solved this issue in Game 4. San Antonio won that game with a 103-82 blowout. Their adjustment to Gilgeous-Alexander involved less aggressive help and better containment on all supporting players.

That exact strategy collapsed in Game 5 on the road. As a result, the Thunder outscored San Antonio 69-52 in the 2nd half.

Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 32 points and 9 assists. But the Oklahoma City supporting cast became the difference in the game. McCain bagged 20 points in his playoff debut. Chet Holmgren also added a double-double.

This failure has now put the Spurs in a desperate situation moving forward.

Spurs Now Face a Must-Win Game 6

Oklahoma City is now just one win away from the NBA Finals. Game 6 will take place on Thursday, May 28. If necessary, Game 7 will return to Oklahoma City on Saturday, May 30.

Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson spoke about the struggles after the game. “It just felt like it was a little bit of everything in terms of we did not put ourselves in a position enough to be successful on each possession,” Johnson explained. He also noted a lack of execution per possession and difficulty handling the physicality.

Victor Wembanyama remained impactful defensively with his rim protection and overall activity. Despite the strong individual efforts from Castle and Wembanyama, the overall perimeter defense of San Antonio failed repeatedly.

Game 4 showed that the Spurs have a working defensive blueprint. Game 5 showed how Oklahoma City can counter that plan.

The Spurs have to fix the mistakes Castle pointed out to save their season. What is your defensive advice to the Spurs before heading to Game 6?
