Phoenix Suns Devin Booker’s Basketball Hall of Fame case went from a sure thing to a massive question mark. The franchise’s success from the past five years open the doors for Booker to receive the much deserved respect from the media, recording four All-Star bids and making two All-NBA teams from 2019-2024. Phoenix was coming off a Finals run and a franchise career-high in wins during that span, with Booker being the forefront of a winning team.
However, the Suns fall from grace will surely effect Booker’s case moving forward. After an embarrassing 36-46 season last year, the future of the team is unknown with Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal gone. The uncertainty has fogged up the future for Phoenix and Booker, as ESPN’s Zach Kram has low expectations on the 28-year-old Hall of Fame case.
Kram did a tier list of current NBA players Basketball Hall of Fame chances, with Booker being put in Tier 5 titled, “29-year-olds on the edge.” The other names on the list are Jalen Brunson, Donovan Mitchell, Domantas Sabonis and Jaylen Brown.
“Out West, Booker has just two All-NBA selections and now finds himself in a terrible team situation, but his consistency since he entered the league as a teenager means he’s 10th in career points through age 28, with 16,452. Stephon Marbury (19th place) is the only player in the top 20 who’s not in the Hall or a lock to get there. Booker could end up with a DeRozan-esque Hall of Fame case in a decade, with enough points to swamp any demerits on his player page.”
Basketball reference has Booker currently at a 6% chance to make it to Springfield, the third-highest in his tier. Booker still has a decade left in his playing career. At 16,452 career points, Booker is less than 4,000 points away from being top 50 on the All-Time scoring list, with everyone above that mark is/projected to be a Hall of Famer.
The only questionable name in the Top 50 is a player mentioned by Kram, that being Demar DeRozan, who is at 25,292 points and counting. DeRozan is a six-time All-Star and three-time All-NBA member, which in the twilight of his career will likely be all of his accolades.
The DeRozan comparison is likely a fair one, as Booker’s projected future with the Suns is filled with non-championship aspirations. The 36-year-old earning all his accolades in an weaker Eastern Conference might hurt his case, while Booker likely spending his entire career in Phoenix and the Western Conference will help.
Regardless of all the accolades, the Basketball Hall of Fame has lost much of prestige by being looser on the requirements to make it in. However, Booker’s fall from sure-fire Hall of Famer to it now being a conversation highlights how deep the franchise has fallen in the past few years.
