During the last games of the NBA Finals, the league was also discussing the Kevin Durant trade. Multiple teams attempted to acquire him from the Phoenix Suns, but only the Houston Rockets were successful. The Miami Heat were one of the favorites, but they missed out.

The Miami Heat have always been a team that chases the best players in the trade market. Following a mediocre 2024-25 season marked by a trade saga involving Jimmy Butler, they needed a boost. A potential trade for Kevin Durant could have been their saving grace.

Unfortunately for the Heat, Durant went to the Houston Rockets. It was a valuable package, as the Suns received a promising player back in Jalen Green, alongside other pieces. The Heat did their best to give a good offer, but it was not enough for the Suns. Durant also loved the fit with Houston, so that became the ultimate destination.

The Heat trade package was not enough

As one of the contenders to land Durant back in June, people expected the Heat to give a good offer.

They did have a package that involved Andrew Wiggins, Terry Rozier, Jaime Jaquez, Nikola Jovic, Haywood Highsmith, and the 20th overall pick.

That was a decent package, but they could not match Green’s potential. Jaquez and Jovic are in a trade package again. This should motivate them to perform better, as the Heat see them as promising players. They see them as alluring trade pieces, but do not plan to build around them.

This became a hot topic again after Draymond Green discussed Butler after Highsmith’s trade to the Brooklyn Nets. It would have been a fantastic move for the Heat, as they could have paired Durant with two All-Stars. Now, Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo still have a decent team around them, but it could have been with Durant.

They still have a promising team, especially with their acquisition of Norman Powell. Adebayo loves that signing, which bodes well for the 2025-26 season. They had to trade Highsmith, but they still have decent depth heading into the regular season.

Durant has a bright future with the Rockets

Heat fans are unhappy with how it turned out, especially the bright future Durant has in Houston. They just let go of Highsmith, so they harkened back to the trade details.

This Houston team can compete for a championship in a loaded Western Conference. They have Durant as the main man, but they also have All-Star Alperen Sengun.

Beyond that duo, they have Amen Thompson, one of the league’s most promising players. They are a fantastic group of players led by head coach Ime Udoka. This Rockets team is scary, and the rest of the NBA is well aware of their potential.

The Rockets are setting themselves apart in the West. It will be a challenging year, but they are ready to compete. With Durant, Fred VanVleet, and a strong cast of young players, Houston could be a problem for the rest of the league.
