The team Kevin Durant wanted to be traded to, instead of the Houston Rockets, weren’t interested in him.

Kevin Durant’s trade to the Houston Rockets was the biggest move of the offseason. Houston brought in the two-time Finals MVP in the hopes that he could bring them into true title contention.

Durant was seeking his third team after leaving the Golden State Warriors in 2019. He missed the play-in last season with the Phoenix Suns, but hoped to better position himself to compete in the Western Conference this season.

However, Durant’s preferred team was not interested in trading for the former MVP.

San Antonio Spurs were not interested in trading for Kevin Durant

Reports linked the Suns and the San Antonio Spurs in a potential trade involving Durant. And he wanted to be traded there. That’s according to a report from the Dallas Hoops Journal, which said the San Antonio Spurs didn’t have much interest in KD.

Ashish Mathur wrote, “Future Hall of Famer Kevin Durant wanted to get traded to the San Antonio Spurs this offseason. The Phoenix Suns knew that and tried to help the NBA legend land with the Spurs, who also knew that Durant wanted to play for them.

“However, the Spurs ‘were never that interested’ in Durant, sources told DallasHoopsJournal.com. San Antonio, sources said, never made a trade offer to Phoenix for Durant, who wound up getting traded to the Houston Rockets.”

The Spurs instead added to their young core, which includes generational talent Victor Wembanyama. They drafted Dylan Harper with the number two pick to play alongside Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle.

De’Aaron Fox got a max extension from the Spurs, in a move that was questioned by many. He doesn’t fit the timeline of the rest of their roster, and San Antonio already have an abundance of guards.

If they wanted to keep all of their young assets instead of trading for Durant, why extend Fox? It’s because there could be another big move on the horizon for the Spurs.

San Antonio Spurs saving young assets to trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo

Mathur’s report went on to say that the Spurs were holding on to their young assets to go after Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks.

Shams Charania said that Antetokounmpo was considering leaving Milwaukee in search of his second NBA championship. Teams have been closely monitoring the Greek superstar’s status in the hopes of making a trade or signing him as a free agent in 2027.

The Spurs are no exception. Mathur wrote, “If Giannis Antetokounmpo ever requests a trade from the Bucks — whether it’s this offseason, next season or next offseason — the Spurs have a bevy of draft picks they can offer to Milwaukee, plus salary filler such as Harper, Johnson, Harrison Barnes and Jeremy Sochan.”

It’s the story underlying almost every move made in this year’s free agency. No team is willing to commit long-term to role players this summer. They fear missing out on Antetokounmpo in two seasons’ time.

The Warriors won’t sign Kuminga to a three-year deal. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly prioritizing the free agent market of 2027.

The Bucks do not look to be positioned for title contention any time soon, despite signing Myles Turner this summer. If they can’t give their superstar a winning team, expect an all-out scrap for Antetokounmpo in the coming seasons.
