Former Milwaukee Bucks guard Jeff Teague believes Giannis Antetokounmpo has a legitimate shot at winning the MVP trophy next season.
Speaking on the Club 520 podcast, Teague said that Antetokounmpo could put up gaudy numbers since he may play the role of a point forward as the Milwaukee Bucks no longer have a true point guard.
“I got Giannis winning MVP. S*** watch! This (is) about to be Giannis’ best year… Nobody on his team, he (is) about to carry so crazy. He might average 34, 13, and 8. This boy (is) about to run point guard basically. His stats (are) about to be crazy,” Teague explained.
Antetokounmpo already won the league MVP twice in his career, in 2019 and 2020, when he assumed the primary playmaking duties for the Milwaukee Bucks. Last season, he finished third in the MVP race behind Nikola Jokic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
ESPN analyst Tim Bontemps pointed to the Milwaukee Bucks’ lack of point guard depth as their biggest hole next season after they waived and stretched Damian Lillard to make room for Myles Turner. While the team added Cole Anthony and re-signed Ryan Rollins and Kevin Porter Jr., Bontemps believes those moves aren’t enough.
“They had Damian Lillard last year, who’s awfully good, and they didn’t really replace him. They replaced Brook Lopez with Myles Turner, but they still have the All-Star point guard hole on their team,” Bontemps explained on The Hoop Collective.
“I’ve liked some of the stuff they’ve done on the margins. Ryan Rollins is an interesting young player. Getting Cole Anthony for the minimum on a buyout is fine. There’s just not a lot of talent on the roster, and they are one Giannis injury away. If he misses three weeks, they quickly become one of the worst teams in the league,” he added.
