Three overreactions from Mavericks' preseason win over Jazz

The Dallas Mavericks hit the road for the first time this preseason on Monday night, hoping to solve a few more issues against the Utah Jazz before the regular season starts next week. D'Angelo Russell missed this game, so the Mavs decided to start the supersized lineup of Cooper Flagg, Klay Thompson, PJ Washington, Anthony Davis, and Dereck Lively II.

Dallas took control of the game by winning each of the first three quarters, limiting the Jazz to a pretty poor showing overall offensively, and won the game 114-101.

There are still some valid concerns about the team, ones that this game really didn't help address. Here are three overreactions from Monday's game between the Mavericks and Jazz.

If the Mavericks Are Serious, Jaden Hardy Won't See Consistent Minutes

The Dallas Mavericks are in a tough situation with their point guard rotation. Kyrie Irving is out for a few months while he recovers from his ACL surgery, Brandon Williams has been out this preseason with a hamstring injury, and Dante Exum has been out with knee soreness. Then, you throw in D'Angelo Russell missing this game, and it was a perfect opportunity for Jaden Hardy to prove he can be a rotational player.

The one issue? He's just not a good player. The passes are erratic, his shot IQ is low, and he's not a good defender. He can score the basketball, but that can be hit or miss. Ideally, Brandon Williams and Dante Exum return soon, and Hardy can go back to being a reserve. But when he's getting outplayed by undrafted free agent rookie Ryan Nembhard (who had 12 assists), it's an issue.

His final stats look fine for this game (13 points, 6 rebounds, 5/15 shooting), but the eye test doesn't back it up at all, especially when a lot of his stats came once both teams had pulled most of their starters.

Cody Williams is a Bust

Cody Williams may not be a Maverick, but he was playing against them. And he was BAD. Williams, the brother of OKC Thunder star Jalen Williams, was selected 10th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft and only appeared in 50 games as a rookie, averaging 4.6 PPG while shooting 32.3% from the floor.

If this preseason has been any indication, he hasn't made any progress. He came into the game averaging just 7 PPG on 38.5% shooting from the floor, and it was a rough game for him in this game, too: 13 points on 5/14 shooting.

The Jazz are a young team still trying to grow, but it's getting increasingly harder to see him being a part of that change.

The Mavericks Might Average the Most Blocks Per Game This Season

Although the Mavericks have faced some bad teams this preseason (the OKC Thunder sat nearly every meaningful player), the interior defense has been elite. Some things just pass the eye test. They had 19 blocks through two preseason games, then added another 10 in this game.

I'm not sold on this being the best defense in the NBA overall. But they have a VERY good chance of being the best interior defense in the league.
