The Los Angeles Lakers, without stars Luka Doncic, LeBron James, and Austin Reaves, lost 111-103 Sunday night to the Golden State Warriors. In the absence of the big three, Gabe Vincent led the way for LA, contributing 16 points and five assists to match three three-pointers made.
The absence of Doncic and James was to be expected due to Doncic’s long summer with EuroBasket and James entering his record-breaking 23rd year. In the Slovenian superstar’s first 28 games for Los Angeles, he led the team in scoring with 28.2 points per game. Scoring is not something new to the five-time First-Team All-NBA selection, as he was the NBA Scoring Champion for the 2023-24 season en route to the NBA Finals with the Dallas Mavericks.
Ahead of this season, though, analysts and former players have begun to make their predictions and have included Doncic in those conversations.
Former three-time NBA Champion Danny Green took to X to make his prediction for the NBA Scoring Title. “This is my pick to lead the league in scoring!” said Green.

Some may see bias in this pick, as Green won his most recent championship with the Lakers in the Bubble in 2020. Nonetheless, would have ranked in the top five in scoring last year had he met the requirement for games played. With his first full offseason with the Lakers, many expect the five-time All-Star to return to form this year, especially with his physical transformation.
After a disappointing playoff performance against the sixth-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves last season, people gave their input on what the problem was for the 50-win Lakers. More often than not, Doncic’s shape and conditioning were the forefront of the conversation, likely due to the Mavericks’ General Manager, Nico Harrison, emphasizing these issues when debating signing Doncic to a supermax extension (via The Athletic).
Moving forward to this season, the Lakers’ head coach, JJ Redick, is putting emphasis on a championship mindset. It’s no secret that the team believes it can win a championship this season, but those aspirations start with a breakout year from the former No. 3 pick in the 2018 Draft out of Real Madrid.

He may not be expected to score nearly 34 points per game as he did in his final full season with Dallas, but he will still be the primary option offensively. For a team including a 21-time All-Star and a rising star in Reaves, add a healthy Doncic, and look out for the Lakers to be one of the top teams in the league on the offensive side of the ball.
