The Thunder have moved back four spots in the draft from No. 37 to No. 41, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, who reports (via Twitter) that Oklahoma City is sending the rights to No. 37 pick Ryan Conwell to the Heat.
Miami is sending cash to complete the deal, per Charania.
The Heat are looking for ways to fill out their bench with cheap rotation players after significantly depleting their depth in the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade. They have four or five roster spots to fill while being $18MM below the first apron, ESPN’s Bobby Marks notes (Twitter link).
Conwell, who was ranked 35th on Jeremy Woo’s final big board for ESPN, is a solid two-way combo guard who was able to play alongside No. 6 pick Mikel Brown Jr. as well as run the offense when Brown was hurt this season in Louisville. He averaged 18.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.1 steals while shooting 34.5% from three on 9.6 attempts per game after averaging 16.5 points on 40.9% shooting from three in his previous two seasons.
Conwell is a tough defender as well, using his size well on the perimeter. For a Heat team that needs to add shooting around its core pair of Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, the 22-year-old guard could be a seamless fit while fitting into their culture of toughness and versatility.
