With the injuries to Donte DiVincenzo and Anthony Edwards in Game 4 against the Denver Nuggets, the Minnesota Timberwolves needed someone to step up in a big way. Ayo Dosunmu was that player, and he finished the game with 43 points and helped lead the Timberwolves to a win.
Dosunmu will be looked to continue his strong play with the current injuries to the backcourt, and it looks like he’s ready for the opportunity. Ahead of Game 5, he was asked if there was a player that he models his game after, and though he didn’t give a specific name, he did have an interesting answer.
“I haven’t been asked that question in a long time,” Dosunmu said via Dane Moore. “I don’t know… The main things I try to do is be efficient, make sound decisions — like a good quarterback, make good reads — and then just play with a free mind.”
That’s a good way to go about the game, and it’s working out for Dosunmu. He was always a key player for the Chicago Bulls over the years, and since being traded to the Timberwolves, he’s been able to flourish more with a winning team. Just like Game 4, he’s been taking the opportunity and making the most of it.
It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Dosunmu in the starting lineup for the remainder of the series with DiVincenzo and Edwards out. DiVincenzo will be out for the rest of the season after suffering a torn Achilles, and Edwards will be out for the next few weeks due to a hyperextended knee.
If the Timberwolves can extend their playoff run, there is a good chance that Edwards returns at some point, and it may be quicker than his expected timeline. For now, the goal the Timberwolves should have is closing out the Nuggets as soon as possible.
