Top NBA Prospect Snubs Hornets Over LaMelo Ball Concerns

Less than a week away from the 2025 NBA Draft, the Charlotte Hornets’ front office faces a sobering reality: not every top prospect wants to join them. According to Mike Lacett of Carolina Sports Live , at least one projected lottery pick has flat-out refused to work out for the Hornets, and the reason goes beyond simple positional overlap. It’s about LaMelo Ball.

“Spoke with a source tonight who told me at least one draft lottery pick refused to work out with the Hornets out of a desire not to play with LaMelo Ball,” Lacett reported.

For a team desperately looking to rebuild after missing the playoffs for the ninth straight year, this kind of news hits hard. While it’s not unusual for point guards to steer away from franchises with an established star at the same position, Lacett made it clear in a follow-up that this wasn’t about roles or minutes.

“This wasn’t a position issue or thing. This was a ‘that guy holds the ball a lot’ thing,” Lacett added on social media.

The message is blunt and unfiltered: at least one elite young player doesn’t see Charlotte, or playing alongside Ball as an ideal development situation.

VJ Edgecombe: Charlotte’s Defensive Fix or Draft-Day Dream?

But while one door closes, another may be inching open. Lacett also noted that Charlotte has serious interest in VJ Edgecombe, a high-upside two-way wing viewed as a potential defensive cornerstone.

“My understanding is Hornets management wants VJ to help transform their defense,” Lacett said.

Edgecombe’s physicality and versatility on the wing make him a compelling fit in Charlotte’s system, especially alongside Ball, whose offensive brilliance hasn’t yet to translate into wins. But there’s a catch: there’s a very real chance Edgecombe won’t even be available at pick No. 4.

If Edgecombe is off the board, Charlotte could explore trading down. Lacett hinted that the Hornets’ contingency plan includes interest in Kasparas Jakucionis, Kon Knueppel, or Tre Johnson. Three very intriguing prospects, but none viewed as consensus top-five talents. The Philadelphia 76ers, who pick third, hold the keys to how this board could fall.

Where Does This Leave the Hornets?

For fans, this development isn’t just about one player avoiding Charlotte. It’s a reflection of a franchise still struggling to redefine its identity, on the court and in the eyes of the next generation of stars. LaMelo Ball is undoubtedly talented, but when prospects start opting out because of his style of play, it sends a clear message: something has to change.

As draft night nears, the pressure is squarely on GM Jeff Peterson to make this pick count, whether that means landing Edgecombe, trading down smartly, or finding a way to make Charlotte a team prospects are excited to join again.
