Tyrese Maxey welcomed LeBron James to the Philadelphia 76ers in a funny way during their season opener. The NBA’s All-Time Leading Scorer took his talents to the City of Brotherly Love during the offseason, signing a two-year deal.
James joins former MVP Joel Embiid, former Finals MVP Jaylen Brown and a couple of young stars. Maxey and VJ Edgecombe form the young, talented Sixers backcourt.
The new-look Philadelphia squad traveled to Madison Square Garden on Tuesday to face the defending champions, the New York Knicks. James and Co. spoiled New York’s ring night, defeating the Knicks 106-100.
James logged 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in his Sixers debut. Brown added 19 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Maxey led Philadelphia with 28 points, four rebounds, five assists, three steals and three blocks.
However, Maxey accidentally photobombed James’ pregame chalk toss — his first-ever in the regular season as a Sixer. The NBA’s official Instagram shared a clip of the hilarious moment.
“@tyresemaxey really photobombed @kingjames’ first @sixers chalk toss,” the league wrote in the caption.
The NBA also included a screenshot of Maxey’s apology via his Instagram stories.
“My bad my bad… give me some time gotta get used to it @kingjames” wrote the 76ers guard.
Maxey made up for the mishap with a strong performance. He played a team-high 40 minutes, leading the Sixers to a big road win against the mighty Knicks.
The Sixers will make their home debut on Thursday, hosting one of James’ former teams, the Cleveland Cavaliers, at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Maxey and James will look to lead their team to back-to-back wins, and their first of 2026-27 in front of their home fans.
