The Cavaliers won’t be advancing to the NBA Summer League tournament, but it’s surely no fault of second-round pick Tyrese Proctor.
After all, Proctor erupted for 35 points in a 94-86 loss to the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday in Las Vegas. The Cavs, who were without Jaylon Tyson (rest) and Craig Porter Jr. (hamstring), are 2-2 with one summer game to go.
Anyway, back to Proctor, the No. 49 overall selection in last month’s NBA draft. Like many rookies, he appeared to get more comfortable as the games went on, and this outing displayed that better than any of them.
He did a nice job of creating space for himself and getting good looks on the way to an 11-of-24 shooting afternoon. His former coach at Duke, Jon Scheyer, took in the action as Proctor was able to connect plenty from midrange. That will undoubtedly be a key for him at the next level.
Along with that, Proctor finished with four assists, three rebounds and two steals.
“Cleveland’s rookie, who didn’t score more than 25 points in any game during his final season at Duke, now holds a share of this year’s single-game Summer League scoring mark, matching the 35-point performance from fellow Blue Devil Kyle Filipowski, now with the Utah Jazz,” wrote Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com.
Meanwhile, two-way big man Nae’Qwan Tomlin gave another impressive showing with 18 points and 12 rebounds — with a whopping 10 of those boards coming at the offensive end. Cleveland State product Tristan Enaruna got the start and added 11 points and five rebounds.
Rookie Nique Clifford led the Kings (4-0) with 19 points and nine assists.
Cleveland recently signed Proctor to a four-year, $8.69 million deal, per Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. The third year of the deal consists of a “significant partial guarantee,” Scotto reported, with the fourth year being a team option.
