Tyler Herro has returned to the Miami Heat rotation, but he is not yet up to speed. As a former three-time champion with the Heat, Udonis Haslem is familiar with the system, and he feels it can get better if Herro is given the green light to play more.

In the 2024-25 season, Tyler Herro was the Miami Heat’s best player. was carrying them through a lackluster season as they tried to navigate the messy Jimmy Butler situation. Now that Butler is gone, head coach Erik Spoelstra has pivoted his team toward a new direction, making them more of a run-and-gun squad.

Herro missed the first month of the season due to an injury. This led to him missing out on the new system, which can be jarring, especially for a player who was heavily featured in the previous system.

Now that Herro has returned, he is getting used to the new system. However, former three-time champion Udonis Haslem thinks there must be some sacrifices made to re-integrate an All-Star guard like Herro into the Heat system.

Which NBA star most needs to be TRADED before the deadline?

The Heat can maximize Herro even more moving forward

In his three games with the Heat, Herro has performed well, averaging 25.7 points per game on 54% from the field and 50% from three-point range. It is a superb return, as he does not look a step slower despite his surgery.

Despite these stellar numbers, Haslem thinks the Heat are not getting the most out of their star player. He is a fantastic star for Miami and a natural scorer, but he can also serve as one of the lead playmakers.

Herro was set to pair up with Norman Powell to form a superb guard duo, but they have not played as many minutes together as Haslem or other Heat fans would want. This has led Haslem to propose a solution that involves taking Pelle Larsson’s minutes away.

“The two games Tyler’s been back, Norman’s only played one of those games. They haven’t had the chance to get in the gym and play together.

“I think the good thing about this team offensively, as long as you’re getting up and down the floor, you’re playing with energy, you’re playing with pace, the ball is going to find you,” Haslem said on the NBA on Prime broadcast.

“That’s just the karma of the game. And then when they get into a situation where they have to run some ATO’, or get those guys in the right situation, we’ve seen how great of a mastermind he [Spoelstra] is in those specific situations.”

“Defensively, you take out a guy like Pelle Larsson, who was hellafire on defense. Pelle was great. I mean, how many charges he took, those different things that he does? But you got Bam back, who can anchor your defense… So I’m looking for those guys to get some more time out there on the court to kind of figure it out and work it out.”

The Heat have impressive depth for the 2025-26 season

Ahead of the 2025-26 season, most people counted out the Heat after their disappointing performance in the previous campaign. Herro was a bright spot alongside rookie Kel’el Ware, who was superb. Bam Adebayo was not the most impressive, especially on offense.

That has all changed in the 2025-26 season as everyone is thriving under the new system. Powell joining the team has been fantastic, as he thrives in a transition environment, but he also does well in the half-court as a complete scorer.

Jaime Jaquez Jr. has benefited from the new system, as he is one of the best offensive players on the roster nowadays. Spoelstra has done a fantastic job in the offseason, as the Heat did not make major roster changes. As the 2025-26 season continues, the Heat will stay a big threat.
