Following another underwhelming performance during the regular season, the Charlotte Hornets have the No. 4 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
Considering the Charlotte Hornets finished as the 14th seed in the Eastern Conference, a top-five pick is certainly a blessing for the organization.
However, aside from the question of who they should draft, the Hornets may have to make a decision about the future of their current cornerstone star, LaMelo Ball.
When the Hornets selected Ball with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, the consensus was that he would help in turning the franchise around.
Unfortunately, in Ball’s first five seasons with the team, the Hornets haven’t advanced to the postseason even once.
What’s worse is that Ball’s presence is reportedly leading to potential draft lottery picks steering away from the team.
“Spoke with a source tonight who told me at least one draft lottery pick refused to work out with the Hornets out of a desire not to play with LaMelo Ball,” Hornets insider Mike Lacett reported on X.
Now, that’s a terrible look for Ball, who is viewed as the face of the franchise. Keeping that in mind, the Hornets should consider moving on from Ball and start rebuilding with other stars.
This NBA offseason is expected to feature some insane trade moves around the league. The first domino fell when the Orlando Magic acquired Desmond Bane in a blockbuster trade with the Memphis Grizzlies.
Following the shocking trade, ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins reported that fans should expect the Hornets to hear trade offers for Ball on 2025 NBA Draft day.
The LA Clippers have been floated as a potential trade destination for Ball by former NBA star Lou Williams.
Although trading the 23-year-old seems like a logical approach, Isaiah Thomas is among the few who trust Ball to turn around the Hornets sooner rather than later.
However, if Ball’s presence is essentially driving away potential draft prospects, then it doesn’t make sense to keep him on the roster.
