Earlier this week, NBA guard Dennis Schroder compared the trade deadline to "modern slavery." Since making that remark, he's been dealt twice.
Schroder, a former first-round pick from Germany, started the 2024-25 season with the Brooklyn Nets. He was traded to the Golden State Warriors in December. In 24 games with the Warriors, he averaged 10.6 points and 4.4 assists per game. Unfortunately for the veteran guard, he was traded to the Utah Jazz in a multi-team deal on Wednesday night.
The Warriors traded Schroder to the Utah Jazz in a deal that landed them All-Star swingman Jimmy Butler.
Less than 24 hours later, the Jazz re-routed Schroder to the Detroit Pistons. While all this movement has to be incredibly unsettling, it's being reported that he'll remain in the Motor City.
"Dennis Schroder, traded from GSW to UTA as part of the Jimmy Butler deal, is being re-routed to the Detroit Pistons, sources tell ESPN. The deal was expanded and the Pistons targeted the veteran guard," Dave McMenamin said.
Hopefully for Schroder's sake, he'll have success in Detroit. As for his comments about the NBA trade deadline, they'll remain a talking point for at least the next few days.
"It’s like modern slavery," Schroder said. "It’s modern slavery at the end of the day. Everybody can decide where you’re going, even if you have a contract. Yeah, of course, we make a lot of money and we can feed our families, but at the end of the day if they say, ‘You’re not coming to work tomorrow, you’re going over there,’ they can decide that. They got to change that a little bit. But still grateful that we’re here and that we can live this every single day. I think everybody who’s in here is blessed. But if you really think about it, it is kind of crazy that the organization can tell you, ‘We want you to be team-first, but you’re going over there.’ It’s a lot."
Schroder is joining a Pistons squad that's trying to make a playoff push in the Eastern Conference. They're currently in seventh place with a 25-26 record.
