Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs had a huge game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, posting 41 points, 24 rebounds, three blocks, three assists and one steal in 49 minutes of playing time.
The stat was historic and helped him surpass Lew Alcindor as the youngest player with 40 points and 20 rebounds in a playoff game, according to ESPN research. In the end, the Spurs beat the Thunder, 122-115, in double-overtime. So, even though the Thunder are favored in this series, all bets are off now.
Wembanyama, as mentioned, had a game that was nothing short of groundbreaking. Also, Wembanyama, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper became the first teammate trio age 22 or younger each with a double-double in a playoff game in NBA history, according to ESPN. Now, what Wembanyama did immediately after the game is getting attention.
Immediately after the game, Wembanyama stood tall in front of the Spurs bench and struck a pose with his hands on his waist, looking strong like a statue. The Spurs bench went crazy and cheered and pointed at him.
Shai Gilgeous‑Alexander received his second consecutive NBA MVP award hours before Game 1 of the Western Conference finals, and Wembanyama said that was on his mind during the matchup.
After the game, Wembanyama was asked in his post-game presser, "Was that in your mind at all knowing that Shai had gotten that award and you were in the top three for it — and did any part of tonight feel personal, some of your facial expressions kind of looked like you were really going for it."
"Yeah, for sure, everything you just said," Wembanyama replied.
So, Gilgeous‑Alexander got MVP, and he's a talented player. But, after games like Monday, it leaves ones wondering why voters didn't branch out and name a new MVP this year, the kind of player who breaks records in double overtime.
