Victor Wembanyama Opens Up on Weight of Expectations Set by Spurs Legends Tim Duncan, David Robinson

When Victor Wembanyama played his first playoff game, the biggest legends in Spurs history were sitting right there in the front row. But as he was up for his first assignment of the postseason, those expectations were something different.

On April 19, 2026, the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 111-98 to open the first round of their playoff run. During the post-game press conference, a reporter asked if he felt the weight of those legends watching him.

However, Wembanyama mentioned that he didn’t let the pressure get to him. He said, “I wouldn’t say weight, no, I would say, I feel safe. It feels like if you trip, you know there’s a lot of hands that are ready to catch you.”

Wembanyama backed up his mindset with an impressive performance on the floor. He scored 35 points, with 5 rebounds, and blocked two shots in just 33 minutes. That scoring total broke the franchise record for points in a playoff debut, passing Duncan’s old mark of 32 points.

The Spurs No. 1 played 64 games this season, averaging 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, and led the entire league with 3.1 blocks per game. He even helped the team end a long playoff drought that started back in 2019.

But to truly understand why he feels so supported instead of stressed, you have to look at the legends who helped him throughout his journey.

A Legacy That Helps Instead of Building Pressure

The San Antonio franchise was built by the original “Twin Towers” in the late 90s. Duncan and Robinson changed the team forever. When Wembanyama talks about hands being ready to catch him, he is talking about these exact guys.

David Robinson started the culture of winning in San Antonio. He won an MVP award, a Defensive Player of the Year award, and the Rookie of the Year award in 1990. He brought home 2 NBA championships.

Tim Duncan then took the command and turned it into a legacy. He won 5 championships, 2 MVP awards, and 3 Finals MVPs. He played his entire 19-year career in San Antonio and holds the NBA record for consecutive All-Defense selections.

Wembanyama is putting up early career numbers that look just like the historic stats Robinson and Duncan posted.

The Spurs now look ahead to Game 2 against the Trail Blazers on 21st April with a 1-0 series lead. Do you think the side will make a deep run this year?
