Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert are expected to go at it in this year’s second round between the Spurs and the Wolves, but the former thinks he’s already better at one specific aspect from his fellow countrymen – defense.
While Gobert might love giving pointers to Wemby, there will always be a comparison between the two. The Wolves’ big man is a defensive behemoth but an offensive liability. Meanwhile, the Spurs beanpole can operate on both ends with high efficiency. Truth be told, Victor Wembanyama would definitely want to win multiple Defensive Player of the Year awards like Rudy Gobert.
According to a report, Wemby certainly thinks he’s a much better defender than Rudy.
“An assistant coach in San Antonio was showing Wemby some stuff that [Rudy] Gobert does especially well…basically saying ‘hey, you can do more of this and that.’ And Wemby said something like, ‘I’m already better than him,” per Tim MacMahon.
There’s an argument to be made about his statements. Victor Wembanyama just won his first (arguably the first of many more to come) DPOY award this year. Stay healthy, and he’ll surpass Gobert’s achievements in no time. But is he the better defender now? Many will definitely agree on that statement.
Game one of the second round series between the Spurs and the Wolves definitely lived up to the hype. And the game went down to the wire, with the Timberwolves escaping with the win, 104-102. Victor Wembanyama had a triple-double, scoring 11 points, 15 rebounds, and 12 blocks, but only shot 5-for-17.
Julius Randle led the Wolves with 21 points in the win. Anthony Edwards, after being projected to miss the first few games of this series, came off the bench and scored 18. If San Antonio wants to even out the series, they need Victor Wembanyama to score more for his team.
