The Golden State Warriors are still in the middle of a contract negotiation with free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga. Kuminga turned down the Warriors' offer of a two-year, $45 million contract extension. However, an NBA insider believes that it was a fair deal.
There hasn't been any update on the Golden State Warriors and free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga. The 22-year-old forward wants to move on with his career with a different organization. However, the Warriors want something in return if they are going to trade Kuminga this summer.
According to earlier reports, the youngster wants a new deal that would give him $30 million annually. But the best offer the Warriors have given him was a two-year, $45 million extension, which he rejected, according to ESPN's Shams Charania and Anthony Slater.
The recent contract offer from Golden State went nowhere after Kuminga declined it.
“Shams and Anthony Slater have reported two (years) for $45 million, which is a fair deal when you look at it with a team option in the second year,” Marks said.
According to Marks, it would be beneficial for the Warriors to have Kuminga under a $22 million per year deal, rather than ot being $8 million. One of the main reasons was that it would allow them to explore the trade market for a bigger star.
“Trading Jonathan Kuminga at a $22 million salary is a lot easier than trading Jonathan Kuminga at an $8 million salary if you’re ready to go hunting for a big name.”
Marks also said that Immanuel Quickley's five-year, $175 million contract extension with the Toronto Raptors has ruined the market for Kuminga. The Raptors guard will earn $32.5 million next season, which leads the insider to believe that the Warriors forward wants to earn a similar amount.
