The Washington Wizards are finally entering a new era with a young core of stars.
Previously, the Washington Wizards hoped for their Jordan Poole and Kyle Kuzma duo to produce results.
However, the experiment failed as the Wizards have now parted ways with both stars. So, who are currently expected to become household names on the team?
Well, the organization has pinned its hopes on French stars Alex Sarr and Bilal Coulibaly.
The Wizards selected Coulibaly with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. Just a year later, the Wizards drafted Sarr with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
Being two lottery picks, the Sarr-Coulibaly duo should produce immaculate results for the franchise in the near future.
However, according to NBA analyst Tim MacMahon, Sarr and Coulibaly’s ‘dreadful’ offense will hold back the Wizards.
“Honestly, both of them are just very bad offensive players,” MacMahon said on The Hoops Collective podcast.
He explained: “They both have really big-time potential on the defensive end, but man, it’s hard to play two guys who are just that dreadful offensively in a league that’s better offensively than it’s ever been.”
For context, Sarr averaged 13.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game during his rookie year. But he shot an underwhelming 39.4% from the field and 30.8% from the three-point line.
Similarly, Coulibaly has averaged 10.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game for his career, but he has shot just 42.7% from the field and 31.1% from deep.
While it can take a couple of years for lottery pick players to shine, MacMahon believes being on a bottom-barrel team hinders the growth of said players.
The NBA expert believes the Utah Jazz are in a similar boat as the Wizards in terms of holding back the growth of their young stars.
“When you’ve got these young lottery picks and they’re playing on this like ‘no hope, awful team,’ that’s when you worry about the development of these guys, and the Jazz are kind of in a similar boat,” he stated.
With the Wizards and the Jazz undergoing a rebuilding phase, the franchises have missed the playoffs in the last three seasons.
It has helped them accumulate draft assets, but what’s the point if they cannot develop these stars?
