Western Conference contenders 'would love' to acquire Clint Capela

The Dallas Mavericks have their eyes on an NBA championship. With an All-Star guard duo of Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, Dallas will feel that they stand a chance of making serious noise in the Western Conference next season.

However, rumors linking them with a potential move for Atlanta Hawks rim-runner Clint Capela continue to swirl.

According to Marc Stein, who was speaking on his 'The Saturday Stein Line' podcast, the Mavericks 'would love' the chance to make another run at Capela, should the opportunity arise.

“The Mavericks don’t want to be done," Stein said. "Maybe they are done with this roster because further moves are not available to them. They would love if the chance to make another trade run at Clint Capela from the Atlanta Hawks materializes to this point.”

Dallas has previously been reported to hold an interest in Capela. Adding a versatile rim-runner to their rotation would give them a genuine pick-and-roll partner for Doncic and Irving. Furthermore, Capela's defense is a significant upgrade over Christian Wood and Dwight Powell.

Capela is about to start a new two-year deal with the Hawks worth $42.8M. The Mavericks would need to get creative in order to acquire Capela without giving up too many assets and weakening their depth.

However, the Hawks may be willing to part with Capela as they look to rebuild their rotation under Quin Snyder, who clearly has a preferred style of play and offensive system.

When speaking on a recent episode of the Hoop Collective with Brian Windhorst, ESPN's Tim MacMahon reported that Capela is 'on the trade block,' which could give Dallas additional hope in landing their prime big-man target.

"Capela is on the block right now, as well," MacMahon said. "And the Mavericks would love to have that type of center."

If Dallas can provide a package that makes sense for both them and the Hawks, then adding Capela would further strengthen their chances of making a deep push toward the NBA Finals next year.

However, the Mavericks need to be sure Capela is the right player for their roster, as they can't afford another season where they pull the plug on potentially contending at the last moment.
