With the 2025-26 NBA season about to tip off, one of the most interesting storylines coming in is how Luka Doncic will look with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Doncic and the Lakers were eliminated in the first round of the NBA Playoffs in five games by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
One of the major concerns after that series loss was Doncic’s physical condition.
Doncic responded by getting into fantastic shape in the summer and having a solid tournament with Slovenia at EuroBasket, as he looks to get back into the MVP conversation this season
James Worthy says Jerry West used to say ‘you don’t really peak ’til you get around 29′ and that Luka Doncic is ‘on a mission’
Doncic enters this season at 26 years old and he won’t be 27 until next year.
For as great as Doncic has been so far in his NBA career, the scary part is he hasn’t even entered his prime yet.
The Slovenian superstar is about to enter his best years, which is good news for the Lakers, who locked up Doncic to an extension this past summer.
Lakers great James Worthy talked about Doncic on ESPN LA and mentioned something Jerry West used to say, which suggests Doncic is just getting started.
“Luka, 27…Jerry West used to always say, you don’t really peak ’til you get around 29. So he’s serious.
“I think he’s gotten by the Dallas stuff, but he’s always going to have that in the back of his mind.
“He’s on a mission. He did well in Dallas, but he’s ready, in a city that demands he win.
“Third in the West last year on half a season with Luka and LeBron not 100%.
“Getting the chemistry and the cohesiveness and their synergy, not having a big, not having a rim protector, they got all the way to the playoffs.”
Even though Doncic looks poised for a big year, the Lakers will face tough competition this season.
The Western Conference is stacked with the defending champions Oklahoma City Thunder still the team to beat.
Other Western Conference powerhouses got better this summer, with the Denver Nuggets and Houston Rockets making key additions.
Other teams like the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Clippers and Minnesota Timberwolves will all be threatening as well.
As things stand, the Lakers should be able to compete for a top-6 spot, but it won’t be easy.
