Victor Wembanyama had every reason to embrace the best-player-in-the-world conversation, but he chose a calmer answer after a massive Game 1.
The question came after a performance that made the debate feel unavoidable. Wembanyama had just carried the San Antonio Spurs through a double-overtime fight against the OKC Thunder.
Instead of turning the moment into a personal coronation, he treated it like noise around a bigger playoff mission.
After being asked by Jared Weiss if he feels like the best basketball player in the world now, Victor Wembanyama gave a measured answer.
Wembanyama said, “Do I feel like it right now? I feel tired. But it’s not a question I’m wondering right now. We’ll see. The world is 8 billion people, so it’s 8 billion opinions.”
It was the perfect response for the moment. Wembanyama did not reject the conversation, but he also refused to chase it after one exhausting playoff win.
That matters because the hype around him is no longer about future potential. The discussion has shifted toward what he already is, and Game 1 gave everyone plenty to work with.
The Spurs star sounded more interested in recovery, preparation and winning the next game than proving a point in a press conference. That is usually how the best players handle praise before a series is close to finished.
The best-player debate grew because Wembanyama’s Game 1 was not just impressive, it was historic. He finished with 41 points, 24 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 blocks as San Antonio beat Oklahoma City 122-115 in double overtime.
He played 49 minutes, shot 14-of-25 from the field, and made 12 of his 13 free throws. The workload alone would have explained the tired answer.
The timing added even more weight. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had just been celebrated as MVP, and Wembanyama responded by producing the defining performance of the night.
Teammates and analysts can argue about where he ranks. Wembanyama’s answer showed he knows those debates will always follow him.
For now, the stronger message is on the floor. If he keeps playing like this, the 8 billion opinions may start moving in the same direction.
