Why the Warriors should extend Draymond Green

Whether the Golden State Warriors win back-to-back titles or finish as a first-round playoff exit, Draymond Green must be the team's top priority this offseason.

Per Spotrac, Green has a $27 million player option for the 2023-24 season that will allow him to become an unrestricted free agent if it's declined. Green, the heart and soul of the team, is one of the best defenders in NBA history. His passing and basketball IQ are irreplaceable, as is his chemistry alongside Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

This season, Green is averaging 8.2 points (highest since 2017-18), 6.9 assists and 7.3 rebounds.

Golden State is +153 when Green is in the game — second on the team, only behind Curry (+164), but with Green, it's not just the box score that tells you how good he is. The eye test also tells you he is among the most impactful players on both ends of the floor.

The biggest reason the Warriors must re-sign Green is because of Curry, who's at his best when moving without the ball. Green is Golden State's best facilitator in those situations. At times, it seems like the two have some telepathic ability, knowing exactly where the other will be each time down the court.

Golden State's trade of James Wiseman to reacquire Gary Payton II will save the Warriors roughly $30 million. That's money that should be allocated for a Green extension. Additionally, the salary cap is expected to jump $10 million next year, so funds should not be an issue.

After a decade in the Bay Area, Green has proved his worth repeatedly, especially in big games. Green, Curry and Thompson are a recipe for success. When the trio starts and plays in the postseason, Golden State is 17-0 in playoff series.

Golden State's core is aging, but it's not time to pull the plug yet. The Warriors must keep Green happy — and an extension would keep Curry and Thompson happy. Give the man what he deserves.
