Will Kyrie Irving Be Traded — and with Who?

Will Dallas Mavericks Guard Kyrie Irving be traded in the near future — and with whom? Let’s take a closer look at this trending topic, so you can make an informed decision.

Will Kyrie Irving Be Traded In the Near Future?

Despite the struggles this season, the Dallas Mavericks reportedly aren’t looking to trade Irving, 33, in the coming days. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon said in Wednesday’s episode of Howdy Partners, “What I would tell you about Kyrie is the Mavericks do not want to trade him.”

MacMahon described the idea of the Mavericks trading Anthony Davis as “a real possibility,” and added that it may even be a “likelihood.”

MacMahon’s words can be taken with a grain of salt, but the ESPN reporter has a good point this time. Davis, 32, is known as an injury-prone player. Davis’s return can work well, but the 32-year-old’s presence can hinder the Mavericks’ goal to build around Cooper Flagg. The 32-year-old reportedly wants to be a power forward, but others believe center would be better.

Who Will Be Traded With Irving?

Irving has yet to play in an NBA game this season after tearing his ACL in March. But, despite the injury, the Dallas Mavericks re-signed the 33-year-old to a three-year, $118.7 million contract this summer.

The Mavericks have been struggling without him in the lineup, with a 5-14 record entering Friday night’s game. That 5-14 record is tied for second-worst in the Western Conference.

When healthy, he’s one of the best NBA guards. His one NBA championship, three All-NBA selections, and nine NBA All-Star nominations can speak for themselves.

If he gets traded, Anthony Davis and Klay Thompson could also get traded. Davis is set to return to the Mavericks’ lineup on Friday night after missing the last 14 games due to a calf strain. Thompson, 35, has been struggling in shooting with career lows from the field and from the three-point line.

Final Thoughts

The Dallas Mavericks may trade Irving if a significant offer is made. However, Irving’s leadership as a veteran guard is respectable on and off the field.

The Mavericks are more likely to trade Klay Thompson, despite the three-year, $50 million contract. If Thompson gets traded, the 35-year-old can be the center of a three-team trade with the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets.

The Mavericks would receive Anfernee Simons and Haywood Highsmith. The Celtics would receive Daniel Gafford and a $27.7 million trade exception from Simons, 26. The Nets would get Thompson, Dwight Powell, the rights to Yam Madar, three second-round picks, and $3.98 million from the Celtics.

Thompson hasn’t been the same since the Golden State Warriors. The Washington State alum could become a salary filler in Brooklyn. We’ll see what happens.
