Wizards Legend John Wall Returns Home to Take on Major Leadership Role at Top-Ranked University

Former NBA star John Wall, who recently stunned fans with his elite college basketball knowledge, is making waves in his post-retirement career.

Wall, best known for his time with the Washington Wizards, is set to take on an exciting new role as the president of basketball operations at Howard University. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, this move brings Wall back to Washington, D.C., where he will team up with one of the country’s top-ranked Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Charania revealed that the idea to partner with Howard began on January 31 when the five-time NBA All-Star served as the honorary team captain for a day.

It was during this experience that Wall revealed his ambition to take on a leadership role in basketball operations, aiming for the NBA level someday. This new chapter promises to be an exciting one for Wall and the Howard University basketball program.

Wall Already Taking a Hands-On Approach at Howard

According to Charania, Wall is already diving right into his new role at Howard. The 2014 NBA Slam Dunk Champion is actively shaping the team’s future by participating in critical meetings and evaluating top recruits and transfer targets.

“He has helped shape the program’s overall strategic vision with focus on roster management, name, image and likeness deals, revenue sharing, agent negotiations and player mentorship. He will work alongside Howard coach Kenny Blakeney and team general manager Daniel Marks in the new capacity.” Via ESPN.

John Wall’s NBA career began when the Washington Wizards selected him with the first overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. He played for nine seasons with the Wizards before joining the Houston Rockets on December 2, 2020. Later in his career, he played one season with the Los Angeles Clippers before officially retiring from basketball on August 19.
