Portland Trail Blazers’ surprising 2025 NBA Draft pick shares his views on the team’s NBA Summer League campaign.
It’s rare to see a team trade out of the lottery to pick a rather unknown prospect in the draft. However, that’s what the Portland Trail Blazers did to select Yang Hansen with the No. 16 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
While Hansen has already been compared to Nikola Jokic, the 20-year-old still has plenty of things to improve. It was evident in the Trail Blazers’ 93-87 win over the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2025 NBA Summer League.
Playing in the Summer League is often considered a great method for players to get into excellent conditioning before the regular season.
Hansen is no different, as the rookie center admitted what has been troubling him so far in the competition.
“I still need to improve my conditioning, and also after some running I still can’t breathe sometimes,” Hansen told the media.
But was there a positive takeaway from his performance vs the Pelicans? Yes.
“This is my career high three points made, whole career. Today I was a little bit tired, I stayed at the three-point line at the top of the key, and I take the shot,” he added.
For context, Hansen shot a terrific 3-of-6 from the three-point line as he continues to get better with each passing game.
Aside from that, the 20-year-old contributed 15 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocks in 27 minutes of playing time.
All eyes were on Hansen for the Trail Blazers, but that doesn’t mean the Pelicans didn’t have an exciting prospect on their roster.
It was the battle of the two centers as Derik Queen shared the court with Hansen. After the game, Hansen also spoke about his NBA rival.
“He’s a great player, he’s strong, he’s a great rebounder offensive and defensive. I think I can learn from him,” Hansen revealed.
Queen finished the night with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists. He also had 1 steal and 2 blocks to his name in 28 minutes of action.
