Mia Williams carried the Texas Tech softball spotlight into the Women’s College World Series, and somehow, the hit-by-pitch drama followed her there too.
This has moved past a weird postseason subplot. Williams has become the player every opponent notices, every camera follows and every teammate seems ready to defend.
That matters because Texas Tech is not just reacting emotionally. The Red Raiders are turning those moments into offense, pressure and another serious WCWS push.
As Barstool Sports showed, Jason Williams had the same stunned reaction many fans had when Mia Williams was hit again in Texas Tech’s WCWS opener.
“You kidding me?” Jason Williams said.
The reaction made sense. Williams had already been hit five times during Texas Tech’s Super Regional series against Florida, and the first inning against Mississippi State added another painful moment to a growing postseason pattern.
This one came on a 51 mph pitch from Alyssa Faircloth that hit Williams in the back. She took first base, and Jackie Lis immediately made Mississippi State pay with a two-run homer that gave Texas Tech early control.
Williams was also involved in another scare later, when a throw hit her helmet as she tried to steal. It was ruled a dead ball, and she advanced as part of the Red Raiders’ four-run fifth inning in an 8-0 run-rule win.
The reason this story keeps getting bigger is not only the contact. Williams has been elite when pitchers actually give her something to hit.
She entered the WCWS after a monster season, hitting .436 with 23 home runs, 80 RBIs and a .920 slugging percentage. Texas Tech’s own release also credited her with a school-record 24th homer in the Florida clincher.
That is what makes the hit-by-pitch run so noticeable. Williams is not a role player caught in a random string of weird at-bats. She is one of the most dangerous bats in the tournament.
Lis put the Red Raiders’ mindset clearly after the game, saying teammates take it personally when Williams gets hit. Their response backed that up.
Jason Williams’ presence around this run has only added fuel to the attention.
The former NBA guard was already part of the Super Regional drama at Florida, where he was removed from the stadium after an altercation before later returning. He also celebrated with Texas Tech after the Red Raiders advanced.
That does not make Mia Williams’ story about her father. Her bat, toughness and production are carrying it.
But when she gets hit again on the WCWS stage, his reaction becomes part of the scene. Texas Tech will not mind that noise if it keeps turning those moments into runs.
