San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch joined Bay Area radio station KNBR on Thursday morning. He was asked about the status of wide receiver Jauan Jennings, who has been sidelined during training camp with a lingering calf injury—the same one that forced him to miss part of the offseason program.
The 49ers have yet to offer a timetable for Jennings' return, and according to Lynch, that hasn't changed.
"Jauan's working with our health and performance staff, trying to get back out on the field," Lynch said. "Jauan got his calf in the offseason, strained it, and calves can kind of linger, unfortunately. And came out, practiced some, and wasn't feeling great, and so we've kind of put him off to the side.
"But Jauan's working hard, like he always does. Don't have any timetable, but we'll see. Looking forward to getting J.J., as we call him, out there on the field. He's such a big part of who we are and what we want to be. Eager to get him back, but won't do it until he's ready."
Jennings is also navigating a contract situation. The 28-year-old receiver is entering the final year of the two-year deal he signed in 2024 and is reportedly seeking a new agreement. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, he will consider requesting a trade if a satisfactory agreement isn't reached.
However, the recent injury setback could complicate contract negotiations, as Jennings still needs to prove he can stay healthy heading into a season where he's projected to be the team's top wideout.
When asked if the 49ers are working on a new deal for Jennings, Lynch offered a measured response.
"We keep that stuff behind the scenes, but Jauan's a big part of who we are, like I just said," Lynch said. "I think, if you watch him play, you can see why. When you're blocking people, and they end up in the Gatorade table, that's a good thing for us.
"He kind of embodies a lot of who we want to be, and so, we love having J.J. around here."
