The San Francisco 49ers did not make a selection in Round 1 of the NFL Draft on Thursday. Instead, they decided to trade out of their 27th overall pick to get more picks later in the draft.
They first traded with the Miami Dolphins, sending their 27th and 138th overall picks to Miami for Miami's 30th and 90th picks overall, as reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 90th pick, a third-rounder, was the key component in this trade as the 49ers did not have a third-round pick coming into the draft; they had traded away the pick, which was 92nd overall, to the Dallas Cowboys for defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa back in March.
The 49ers weren't done, as they traded again, this time with the New York Jets, sending their 30th overall pick for New York's 33rd and 179th picks overall, as Schefter reported. The 33rd pick served as the first pick in the second-round, while the 179th pick was a fifth-rounder.
Trading completely out of the first round entirely, the 49ers came into the draft with six picks and come out of Day 1 of the NFL Draft with seven, turning one of their four fourth-round picks into a third.
49ers general manager John Lynch alluded to this during his pre-draft press conference on Tuesday.
"We've done our homework, we'll continue to talk to teams and have discussions such that, if we see fit the opportunity to move up and grab a player that we really like or, you know what, we still like a bunch of players, so let's pick up. I would tell you, we don't have a ton of picks in this draft right, so it does make some sense to, how can we find some more picks? We'll certainly be open to that," Lynch said.
The 49ers certainly did that, deciding to add more picks, as many of the players they targeted are still available heading into the second round.
The 49ers open Day 2 of the NFL Draft on Friday at 7 p.m. ET with the first pick in the second round. Will they make a selection, or will they continue to make moves?
"I think the cool thing about the 33rd pick, it puts you in a really nice (spot), we can kind of reconvene, reset our board, reset our thoughts, and I think it's also a coveted pick," Lynch said Thursday after the first round.
"We got a good idea of some names, we're always open for business. I think that would be foolish not to listen, and so we will do that, but we've got a good idea of where we're going and looking forward to that."
The 49ers have positioned themselves in a very favorable spot as teams have a whole day to evaluate players who have been taken and players who are still on the board. Many teams might want to jump at the opportunity to draft a player they really like, and the 49ers now hold the first pick of Day 2 to entice a team into a trade, further adding to their draft capital.
The 49ers could also look at trading for an established, veteran player who can help them win now; a combination of the 33rd overall pick and a veteran player could work for them in that scenario. If not, the 49ers still have a very solid pick and have a chance to get a player they really liked at 27 who is still available at 33 while adding more picks to their draft.
