The San Francisco 49ers have a new kicker.
The 49ers on Tuesday signed Eddy Piñeiro to serve as their place kicker. He is replacing Jake Moody, whom the team cut earlier in the day. San Francisco had brough Piñeiro in for a workout, so his signing seemed to be made in conjunction with Moody being cut.
Piñeiro, who turns 30 on Saturday, has kicked in the NFL off and on since 2019. He spent the last three seasons as the Carolina Panthers’ kicker. Piñeiro was 80/90 (88.9 percent) on his field goal attempts over his three years with the Panthers. He was more shaky on extra points, where he went 80/87 (92 percent).
Piñeiro kicked in college at Florida from 2016-2017 before entering the NFL draft. He went undrafted but signed with the Raiders as a free agent. He missed the 2018 and 2020 seasons due to injuries, but he has found his way onto rosters the rest of the time. Now, San Francisco will hope to get some improved kicking with Piñeiro in the mix rather than Moody.
Here’s a stat that will blow your mind: Piñeiro is currently the third-most accurate kicker behind Justin Tucker and Harrison Butker.
