It did not take long for San Francisco 49ers stars George Kittle and Brock Purdy to open their account in the new season. The two connected for a touchdown in the first quarter of the Niners’ Week 1 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, with Purdy finding Kittle for a five-yard touchdown pass at the 3:43 mark of the opening quarter.
Unfortunately for Kittle, his day was cut short after the two-time All-Pro tight end was forced to exit the game in the second quarter due to a hamstring injury. After being checked by the medical staff, Kittle was eventually ruled out for the remainder of the game. The six-time Pro Bowler finished with four receptions for 25 yards and one touchdown.
Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters after San Francisco's hard-fought 17-13 win over the Seahawks, and one of the most compelling questions he faced was about Kittle’s concerning injury situation. When asked if he had any updates on his star TE, the veteran coach did not have much to offer.
"No, I mean, we've got to get the MRIs and everything tomorrow to find out," Shanahan said, via Niners Wire.
49ers fans will now have to hold their breath and hope for the best. The results of Monday’s MRI will determine the extent of the injury as well as how much time, if any, Kittle will have to miss because of this hamstring problem.
It is also worth noting that wide receiver Jauan Jennings also left the Seahawks game in the fourth quarter due to a shoulder injury, and he, too, will undergo tests on Monday.
The Niners may have kicked off their season with a win, but it may have come at a significant cost.
