The odds of the San Francisco 49ers playing an international game in 2025 went up on Wednesday, as the Indianapolis Colts were confirmed as the home team for the first regular-season game to be played in Berlin.
San Francisco was already in the mix to play abroad next season after the Cleveland Browns were announced as having a home game in London in 2025.
The 49ers are scheduled to face both the Browns and the Colts on the road next year.
San Francisco last played an international game in 2022, routing the Arizona Cardinals in Mexico City.
The 49ers last played in London in 2013, a blowout win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. They are undefeated in London having also beaten the Denver Broncos in 2010.
San Francisco is one of the teams that has marketing rights in the United Kingdom, where it holds a large fanbase.
But the chance to make history in Berlin would perhaps make more sense for the Niners on this occasion, given their prior connection to the city.
The 49ers played the first game between NFL teams in the officially reunified Berlin in August, 1991, beating the Chicago Bears 21-7 as part of the American Bowl series of exhibition games, which ran from 1986 to 2005.
Having already made history once at the Olympiastadion, it would be fitting for the 49ers to have the chance to return to that famous stadium.
There are obviously huge logistical challenges that come with a West Coast team playing a game in Europe. But, whether it's in London or Berlin, the stars appear to be aligning for the Niners to make the trip across the pond in 2025.
