49ers reach extension with key offensive lineman
San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Colton McKivitz Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers have been working on extending players ahead of free agency, and the first player up is offensive lineman Colton McKivitz. The 49ers reached a two-year extension with the veteran who the team hopes can be a key cog in the trenches.

Colton McKivitz Extended

McKivitz was drafted in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The extension will keep the 49ers offensive lineman under contract through the 2024 season.

The McKivitz news was reported by the 49ers on Twitter, but the full details of the extension have yet to be announced.

McKivitz was set to be a restricted free agent but was able to get an extension before having to go through the tender process. As things stand, McKivitz could compete to become the starting right tackle for the 49ers. Last year's starter, Mike McGlinchey, will most likely leave the team in free agency, and this move gives the 49ers some insurance if he were to exit.

Free agency begins next week, so expect more activity related to the 49ers offensive line.
