49ers roster moves: Receiver promoted to active roster, veteran added to practice squad

The San Francisco 49ers have promoted wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to the active roster from the team's practice squad. To make room on the roster, the team released wide receiver Russell Gage Jr. and later signed him to the practice squad. Both moves were first reported on Tuesday.

The 49ers Communications staff provided the following rundown.

Valdes-Scantling (6-4, 206) was originally drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round (174th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft. Throughout his seven-year NFL career with the Packers (2018-21), Kansas City Chiefs (2022-23), Buffalo Bills (2024) and New Orleans Saints (2024), he has appeared in 106 games (68 starts) and registered 205 receptions for 3,566 yards and 20 touchdowns and added 10 carries for 52 yards. He has also appeared in 11 postseason contests (seven starts) and registered 24 receptions for 406 yards and four touchdowns. In 2024, Valdes-Scantling appeared in 14 games (eight starts) and registered 19 receptions for 411 yards and four touchdowns. He signed to the 49ers practice squad on August 28, 2025.

A 30-year-old native of St. Petersburg, FL, Valdes-Scantling attended North Carolina State (2013-14) before transferring to the University of South Florida (2016-17) where he appeared in 45 games and registered 119 receptions for 1,832 yards and 12 touchdowns to go along with 10 receptions for 112 yards and one touchdown.
