The San Francisco 49ers are signing former Detroit Lions running back Kerryon Johnson to their practice squad, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The news comes after Raheem Mostert announced he would undergo season-ending knee surgery.

Mostert injured his knee early Sunday in the 49ers' 41-33 Week 1 win over the Lions. He finishes the season with two carries for 20 yards.

Johnson, 24, spent the first three seasons of his career with the Lions before joining the Philadelphia Eagles for the 2021 campaign. The Eagles claimed Johnson off waivers in May but released him last month due to a knee injury.

The Auburn product's best season came during his rookie campaign in 2018. He ran for 641 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games that season.

During the 2020 season, Johnson ran for 181 yards and two touchdowns in 16 games. He ended up serving as a backup to D'Andre Swift.

With Mostert sidelined, the Niners are expected to rotate Elijah Mitchell, Trey Sermon and JaMycal Hasty in the backfield.
