San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Demarcus Robinson has been suspended for the first three games of the 2025 season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed on KNBR radio.
Robinson, 30, pleaded no contest in July to a misdemeanor DUI charge stemming from a November 2024 arrest in Los Angeles while he was with the Rams. He was sentenced to 36 months of probation and ordered to pay a $390 fine. At the time of the arrest, Robinson was allegedly driving over 100 mph and showed signs of intoxication during a traffic stop.
“You can always appeal it, so we’ll hope for the best on that,”
Shanahan said. “But three weeks is what we’re planning for.”
Robinson signed a two-year, $9.5 million contract with San Francisco in March, with the team aware that discipline was likely coming. He has been one of the 49ers’ most reliable options in camp, with Shanahan calling him and second-year receiver Ricky Pearsall the “two most consistent” wideouts on the roster.
Still, the three-game suspension creates another complication for a banged-up receiver group. Brandon Aiyuk is still recovering from ACL and MCL tears in his right knee and likely won’t return until around Week 6. Veteran Jauan Jennings is battling a calf injury while seeking a new contract, and rookies Jordan Watkins (ankle) and Jacob Cowing (hamstring) continue to miss time.
To help offset Robinson’s absence, the 49ers traded with the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday evening for wide receiver Skyy Moore , sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. San Francisco received Moore and a seventh-round pick in 2027 in exchange for a sixth-round selection.
Moore,
a 2022 second-round pick, caught 43 passes for 494 yards and one touchdown across two seasons in Kansas City. His 2024 campaign ended early due to a core muscle injury, but he flashed recently with an 88-yard punt return touchdown against Seattle in the preseason.
Robinson is entering his 10th NFL season. A fourth-round pick by the Chiefs in 2016, he spent six seasons in Kansas City and was part of their 2019 Super Bowl-winning team. He later played with the Ravens and Rams, starting all 17 games last year for Los Angeles while posting career highs in touchdowns (seven) and receiving yards (505).
Should the suspension stand, Robinson will miss the 49ers’ opener at Seattle, Week 2 at New Orleans, and the Week 3 home game against Arizona. He’ll be eligible to return in Week 4 against Jacksonville.
For a San Francisco team already managing multiple injuries at wide receiver, Robinson’s absence adds more uncertainty just weeks before the season kicks off.
