The Philadelphia Eagles have become increasingly likely to trade star receiver AJ Brown to the New England Patriots. It was reported on Monday morning that conversations will resume around June 1st, with an agreement to follow shortly thereafter.
The Eagles now need to refocus on life without Brown. Devonta Smith is more than qualified to lead a receiver core, but there will still be a void left at the position. Howie Roseman will look to replace Brown either through the trade market or the upcoming NFL draft. These are five candidates to look for in the coming days and months.
Omar Cooper Jr is someone who should be available at pick 23 when the Eagles are on the clock. He has risen up draft boards in the last few months, with a majority of reports placing him at the back end of the first round. Cooper would give Philadelphia a tough and physical receiver opposite the smooth route running of Smith.
Denzel Boston is another projected first-round pick in the NFL draft. The Eagles have drafted players similar to Boston before and have not seen great results. The tape is very reminiscent of former second-round pick JJ Artega-Whiteside. A jump ball receiver with good, reliable hands. His drop percentage was amongst the lowest of receivers in this year’s class. He certainly could turn out much better than Artega-Whiteside, but Eagles fans may be a little weary.
Chris Bell is a projected round two pick on Thursday, with him drawing physical to Brown. A big-bodied receiver who makes a majority of his catches in the middle of the field. This would be the way to go if Roseman wants to use the least amount of assets on a replacement. No first-round pick and no trade capital while sticking to a cheap and affordable rookie contract.
Brian Thomas Jr is the first of two trade candidates named as potential replacements for Brown. The Jacksonville Jaguars uber-talented wideout has had a very up-and-down career thus far. If it is decided to be best to move on, Roseman could pounce on an opportunity to add a talented player at his lowest value.
Marvin Harrison Jr. is perhaps the perfect replacement for Brown. The question would be if the Arizona Cardinals would trade Harrison, and if the Eagles would pay the likely steep price. A Smith-Harrison duo would be one of the best in the NFL, potentially meeting the same heights as the Brown-Smith tandem.
Trading Brown is not something the Eagles necessarily want to do. No NFL team ever wants to give up a player with that much talent. With that being said, it appears they have no choice. The Patriots appear to be heading towards a deal post June 1st. For the Eagles, adding one of these five replacements won’t fill the void left by trading one of the franchise’s best receivers of all time. It is necessary to add to the position group before week one, however.
